Planning a Trip to the Highlands (The Start)

Planning a trip to the highlands

When it comes to planning a trip anywhere, it always seems to be very difficult. There are so many things you have to think about, what to do, where to stay, what to see etc… and Scotland and the highlands are no different.

There are some many things to see and do, it is essential that you plan and make the right preparations before you go. Below are some tips you should consider whist you are planning your trip, follow these simple steps and you should be on track to creating an amazing itinerary for travelling around an amazing country.

Write it down

When it comes to brainstorming and thinking of where to go, you need to write everything down. If you think of a city, land mark, castle, mountain or restaurant that you’ve heard about, it is a really good start to get it all down on paper (or type it on your phone) so you don’t forget (this is very useful for me as I forget everything).

You can get ideas from watching TV or an article that pops up on the internet that catches your eye, you might hear your colleagues talking about a city they went to, just make sure you capture all the info. Another way to find out what to do is to use our old friend Google, this is my go-to place to find an answer.

Once you have compiled a list of things to do and where to stay, it’s a good idea to get back on Google and find out where it is, what there is to do there and why you want to go, this will help you rank them in order of your favourite things to do.

Things to consider

There are many things to consider when planning your trip to Scotland and the Highlands, and here are a few below.

Make sure you find lots of things to do even if you don’t get to do all of them, this is important because sometimes you go to do something and it might not take as long as you think or, you get there and it’s not open (always check if an attraction is open) but, if you plan other things to do, you don’t have to wast valuable time looking on Google on your phone for other things to do, there is no such thing as over planning.

Another reason why you should plan more things to do is because of the ever changing Scottish weather, even if you look at the forecast in the morning, it doesn’t mean it can’t suddenly start raining, we fell victim to this and were frantically trying to find something else to do, so always have a backup plan.

When planning a trip around the Highlands there are so many things to do, places to go and things to see, and sometimes there will only be a couple of things to do in the area and sometimes there will be loads so, we found that even tho you might want to be driving though the beautiful hills and mountains of the highlands every day, it’s actually a good idea to stay in a few places for more than one night, and by doing this, you won’t be rushing around trying to fit everything in and you will be able to chill out and soak everything in, and it can also get very tiring driving for hours every day on the winding Highland roads.
